Dear guests,

best time whale shark, If you’re planning your trip to Quintana Roo and see photos of Cancun’s beaches covered in sargassum, don’t worry  it may be one of the best time whale shark tour.

The sargassum season (May to September, peaking between June and August) overlaps almost perfectly with the annual aggregation of whale sharks off Isla Mujeres. While the algae accumulates in shallow coastal waters and on the beaches, these gentle giants feed in clear, deep waters 15 to 25 miles offshore, far from the sargassum.                The same ocean conditions that push the algae toward the coast help create the perfect environment for large numbers of whale sharks.

In other words, the more sargassum you see on the beach, the higher your chances of an unforgettable encounter in the open sea. A fascinating scientific study has also revealed something remarkable about their diet.                                In 2022, researchers from the Australian Institute of Marine Science, led by Dr. Mark Meekan, analyzed tissue samples from whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef.

Using stable isotope and fatty acid analysis, they discovered that whale sharks actively consume and digest Sargassum — the same type of floating brown algae.
Published in the journal Ecology, the study shows that whale sharks are not purely planktivorous but are in fact the world’s largest omnivores. Their tissues contained compounds characteristic of Sargassum and its associated organisms, confirming it forms a significant part of their diet.

Scientific research is still needed to better understand the relationship between whale sharks and sargassum in the Mexican Caribbean

Unfortunately, no similar studies yet exist for the whale sharks in Quintana Roo. It would be highly valuable if local biologists and researchers conducted comparable research in the Mexican Caribbean to better understand these incredible animals.
If you’re visiting between May and September, is the best time whale shark tour is definitely worth considering — it might be the highlight of your trip.
